Lena and her brother Edward went to Pictou in search of employment. Lena started work right away at the staff kitchen that served meals to the workers of the Pictou shipyards. Jimmy came to Pictou from Glasgow, Scotland and was smitten with Lena when he first met her. Along with friends of theirs, Lloyd and June Adams, from Tyne Valley PEI they decided to move to Montreal as shipbuilding in Pictou was slowing down. That's where they were married and lived before settling in Peterborough Ontario. Read more of the story in the poetic song written by Lee Anne below.
Known to us as "Lena", her birthname is Marie Lina. She was born on Jan 23, 1925 in St. Ann's PEI. Her husband was James Joseph Quinn, known to us as " Jimmy". He born Dec 21, 1910 in Glasgow, Scotland. Lena was the 5th child and was born in the old farm house. According to Lena, there was a terrible snow storm making it difficult for the doctor to get the farm. The Doiron family moved into their new house on the homestead when she was five years old. Jimmy immigrated to Canada in the late 1920's, with the hopes of a better life in Canada. He settled in Nova Scotia and tried his hand at farming, salt mining and during the war at ship building in Pictou Harbour, where he met Lena. After Lena and Jimmy were married, and after a few years of work in the Montreal shipyards, Jimmy heard that General Electric, in Peterborough, Ontario was hiring fitters & welders. So he headed off to Peterborough with a few buddies to check it out and fell in love with the city. Jimmy always said it was a great place to raise a family. He worked for General Electric until he retired at age 60. He then pursued his passion for building furniture for family and friends. He passed away Sept 28, 1992 at the age of 81, surrounded by his family. Lena stayed very busy through all those years caring for the home and the family. She was true to her raising, always welcoming anyone who came through Peterborough for a visit, participating in the children's school and sports activities, and was a dedicated church goer and community supporter. Lena continued to stay very active after Jimmy's passing, especially as grandchildren came along. They, and many of the cousins could always count on Aunt Lena or Nana, as she was also known, to have a hot meal in the oven or a nice cake for desert, it seemed at a moments notice. She loved to have fun with her girls and managed to get her share of time at the odd casino (just for laughs of course), especially after a Johnny Reid concert. She enjoyed travelling as long as she was able, cooking, quilting, knitting, and cards. Her love of PEI, the Montreal Canadiens (the HABS), her children and her siblings, was evident. Her spirit, and that "throw-your-head-back" vibrant smile and laugh will live on for many of her family, into eternity. Lena continued to live in her home until her passing ,just shy of her 97th birthday on Dec 10,2021. We are sure she is closer than ever to the Catholic Saint she was known to pray to on all our behalf: St. Anthony, the patron saint for the recovery of lost items who is credited with many miracles involving lost people, lost things and even lost spiritual goods.
